Pumpkin

Pumpkin is Calico Mama's oldest kitten that is still with us. We believe he was born sometime in 2010. He was neutered the very first time Tom Wargo came and trapped in early 2011. He is an orange tabby, and had a good bit of his left ear clipped when he was neutered. Pumpkin has become a big friendly cat, and is a favorite with many of our employees. He is frequently seen near the employee parking garage on the breezeway, and on the back patio or sidewalk. Over the years, he has learned who his biggest fans are, and lovingly runs to them for the food and treats they give him! In the past, cat lovers would leave food on the breezeway for Pumpkin to make sure he had plenty to eat. Soon, the hospital posted signs on the breezeway saying "Do not feed the cats". The problem was all the food that was being scattered and left on the breezeway. It's perfectly fine with us if you want to feed Pumpkin, just please make sure he eats all you give him, and none is left on the ground that might attract other "critters".

Socks

Socks was the most outgoing and friendly kitten in his litter. Socks was a patio favorite, and many employees talked about wanting to take him home. In the summer of 2014, Socks disappeared from the patio. We feel that someone must have finally taken him home. If you know who adopted him, ask them to please send us a picture. We would love to see how he is doing!

Romeow & Juliecat

Both Romeow and Juliecat are orange tabby with white chests and white on their legs/feet. Romeow is a big cat, and Juliecat is small like her mother.

Romeow hangs out on the patio and sidewalk with Pumpkin and his mother. He definitely loves the food and pets he gets from his fans!

Juliecat moved from hanging out on the patio/sidewalk to the backyard over towards the Women and Children's area and Brenau. She loved older brother Sneakers, and they were often seen together. As mentioned above, she later disappeared from the hospital. A Brenau employee contacted me, asking if the picture she sent was of one of our hospital cats. The picture was of Juliecat. The employee adopted Juliecat, and much to our delight, she frequently sends us pictures of sweet Juliecat living the good life inside her house!

The vet forgot to "tip" Mama's ear, but she is definitely spayed! She had some really sweet kittens, but we are extremely excited about the better life she now lives. Since being spayed, Mama has gained weight and looks really good.

2015: Masie, Jack and Jill

Just like clockwork, Calico Mama brought us three kittens in the summer of 2015. Fortunately for Mama and us, these were her last kittens!

Masie

We trapped Masie first, and after several days at the vet, she became very social. She is a sweet and precious girl who went to a very loving home with an older brother kitty. They quickly became the best of friends.

2013: Midnight, Alexander, and Clark

Calico Mama's kittens from 2013 were born in May/June and were trapped in August when they were approximately 12 weeks old. Midnight (tortoise shell) and Clark (calico) are female, and Alexander is a tabby male. All three went to loving homes. The above names were given to them by their new parents!

2013: Blaze, Whiskers, Lily, Meeks, and Leo

Calico Mama had a second litter of kittens on September 9th, 2013. She put them under the ramp outside the door near the cafeteria. Our plan was to find a time when Mama was under the ramp with the kittens, seal the exit off, and capture them all. Unfortunately, while we were getting ready to go under the ramp, Mama ran out, leaving the kittens under there by themselves. Even though it tugged hard at our heartstrings, we took the kittens. They were a few days away from being 6 weeks old. We knew taking them that night while they were all together under the ramp was our best chance of getting them all while they were young enough to be socialized. As expected, the kittens quickly became social, and we found loving homes for them just as fast.

Boots & Sneakers

Named after "Puss In Boots" in the movie, Boots looks a lot like Pumpkin because of his orange tabby fur. Their differences include Boots' left ear is barely tipped and Pumpkin's left ear is tipped almost half way down, and the tip of Boots' tail has two wide rings of white, and Pumpkin's does not. Also, Pumpkin is very friendly and will allow cat lovers to pet him. Boot's wouldn't even get close to our feeders until he was 7 years old. In addition to his "meow" greeting, Boots now runs to the two people that have fed him the most wanting pets and attention! Boots can be seen in the back of the hospital, anywhere from the sidewalk, to the bottom of the hill, and all the way over to the Women and Children's Pavilion area.

Sneakers is a brown/black tabby. Like brother Boots, Sneaker's left ear is only barely tipped, but no one has ever petted him. He still runs from the feeders if they get too close. Sneakers and younger sister Juliecat (born in 2012) were in love, and could often be seen together. But Midnight didn't like Juliecat, and we feel that she eventually ran away to Brenau because of him. Julicat became friends with one of the Brenau employees who eventually adopted her. We were heartbroken for Sneakers, but Julicat was the one who chose to leave the hospital property and not come back.

2010-2011: Phoenix and Mr. Vogue

Calico Mama had two more kittens in very late 2010 or very early 2011.

Unfortunately, Phoenix, the long haired kitten disappeared shortly after these pictures were taken in mid 2011. He was last seen with respiratory problems, so we believe he passed away.

The short haired kitten, Mr. Vogue, was with us until 2017. Vogue stayed in the Women and Children's area, and was good friends with Midnight and Pretty Girl. We called Midnight and Vogue "running buddies" because were almost always together!

Vogue started looking really bad in early 2016, and had quit eating. We captured him early one morning (with a fishing net on a pole), and took him to the vet. The vet discovered he had severe feline stomatitis. The only hope of him getting better was to extract the offending teeth, so we did. He spent almost two weeks at the vet before healing enough to return to the hospital. Vogue lived a wonderful and happy life for another year and a half before getting a very disfiguring carcinoma of the face/jaw. It took several months to recapture him, then we said goodbye as the vet ended his suffering.

Mr. Vogue is buried at the hospital in the area he spent his life.

Mama & Her Kittens

These are Calico Mama's kittens that were born sometime in July/August 2012. All were trapped, then spayed and neutered in October 2012. By the time we trapped them, we felt they were too old to fully socialize, so we returned them to the hospital. After their return, all three became friendly to those who wanted to give them some attention. Their names were chosen thru a contest.

Calico Mama brought us four kittens in the summer of 2014. They were about 12 weeks old when we trapped them. All four went to loving homes.

Mr. & Mrs. Groundhog

Phoenix & Vogue

There  are a few groundhogs that live behind the hospital and over near the college. Groundhogs live solitary lives except for when they are breeding. I'm guessing the groundhog that stays behind the hospital is a Mr. since we have never seen baby groundhogs at the hospital. The groundhog that stays near the college is a female. She had two little groundhog babies running thru the woods with her this past summer! (Wish we could have gotten a picture of that!)

Gracie was finally trapped and spayed in October 2012. She disappeared from the hospital in 2014, and was later found living on Sherwood Park Drive (around the corner from the hospital). She is enjoying life and being cared for by a wonderful dentist's office Monday thru Friday, and we feed her on the weekend when the dentist's office is closed. She had a great friend Sherlock that lived at the dentist's office with her for a while. But Sherlock became sick and was unable to remain an outside cat, so he was adopted and now lives as an inside only cat.

Calico Mama

Calico Mama, or Mama Calie as some call her, has been a hospital regular for many years. Some long time employees say they remember her being on the patio in 2007. We know she had 3 kittens sometime in 2010. When Tom Wargo (from The Backyard Sanctuary) came in 2011 to trap the first cats after our program was approved by the hospital, he trapped Mama fairly quickly. Unfortunately, before Tom could secure the trap, someone let her out thinking she was going to be euthanized. Mama was then "trap smart", and despite multiple trapping events over the next four years, she never went back into a trap. In 2015, we were finally able to sneak up behind her and capture her with a fishing net! In those four years, she had 21 more kittens. Of those 24 total kittens, four are still with us, one now lives on Sherwood Park Drive, two have passed away, and the other 17 went to forever homes.

Gracie

Gracie is a small dark tabby cat. Before she was trapped, Gracie had two litters of kittens. The first litter, when she was barely 9 months old, disappeared after a few days. Later in 2012, she had one male orange kitten. She put him under the patio just like her mother had done with her. We believe someone adopted him from the patio. If anyone knows who adopted him, please ask them to email us a picture. We would love to see how he has grown!

Jack & Jill

We weren't able to trap Jack and Jill until a week later. They were crazy wild in foster care, so we took them to the vet so they would have people around them all day. Unlike their sister, Jack and Jill didn't want any affection from a human. The vet suggested we spay and neuter them, then return them to the hospital to live with the other feral cats. We first tried to get them adopted as barn cats, but no one came forward, so we took them back to the hospital and released them. Jack and Jill quickly became patio favorites, and several employees brought toys for them to play with.

When the kittens were about 6 months old, Jack was noticed to have something wrong with one of his eyes. There was one employee who thought she might could get the kittens in a carrier so we could take them to the vet. Most people couldn't even get close to them, much less pick them up, but that's exactly what she did. She picked them up one by one and put them right into a carrier! Jack's eye healed nicely, and he and Jill went home with that sweet lady who won their love and trust while they were still babies. We are so fortunate that she often sends us pictures of sweet Jack and Jill so we can see what a wonderful life they are living!
